Human remains have been discovered in the long-unsolved disappearance of Natalee Holloway.
Holloway, 18, was with friends on a post-high-school trip to Aruba in 2005 when she vanished — leaving her heartbroken loved ones wondering for years what happened to her.
On the 10-year anniversary of Natalee Holloway's disappearance, her mother is still trying to find justice for her daughter — though she says she has found joy. I've been able to redefine my life, and I've been able to find joy and happiness through my son, through my son's new family, and my work, so I think I'm in a good place now." Holloway was 18 when she disappeared on a high school graduation trip in Aruba on May 30, 2005.
"It's hard to believe it's been 10 years,'' Beth Holloway told Savannah Guthrie exclusively on TODAY Monday. The last people the Alabama teen was seen leaving a nightclub with were a pair of brothers and Joran van der Sloot, a Dutch citizen who was later sentenced to 28 years in prison after being convicted of killing a Peruvian woman, Stephany Flores Ramirez, in 2010.
Multiple people have been arrested in connection with Holloway's disappearance, including van der Sloot, but none was ultimately charged.
A judge declared the case closed in 2007, and then it was reopened in 2008 in light of a new interview with van der Sloot in which he appeared to confess, but he claimed he was under the influence of marijuana in the interview and was not telling the truth.
Previous theories posited that Holloway’s body was hidden in a construction site or dumped in the sea.
A previous informant told “Inside Edition” two years ago that he saw Holloway being chased into a building by van der Sloot, who emerged a short while later carrying her in his arms.
Van der Sloot initially denied knowing Natalee's name, but he then told the following story, with which Deepak Kalpoe, who was present, agreed: Holloway stated that she received copies of police statements stating that van der Sloot admitted having sex with Natalee at his home and described intimate details of her.Immediately after receiving word about Natalee's missed flight, Jug and Beth Twitty flew to Aruba with friends by private jet.Within four hours of landing in Aruba, the Twittys presented the Aruba Police Force with the name and address of Van der Sloot as the person with whom Natalee left the nightclub.Holloway’s father, Dave, and private investigator T. Ward said Wednesday on NBC that the information led to the discovery of remains that have been confirmed as human.Natalee Holloway missing for 10 years as family awaits news They’re now being DNA-tested to determine whether they are Holloway’s.
Van der Sloot is serving a sentence of nearly 30 years in a Peruvian prison for the murder of a young woman there.
